At Cedar Doodles, we’ve worked with countless Micro Mini Goldendoodle puppies, and one of the most common concerns new families have is crate training and nighttime potty routines. Fortunately, setting your puppy up for success is all about consistency, timing, and positive reinforcement. Here’s how we help our puppies transition smoothly to sleeping through the night—and how you can do the same at home.
A huge part of what makes our potty-trained Micro Mini Goldendoodle puppies thrive is early crate conditioning. From the start, we teach our puppies that the crate is a calm, cozy place—not just a space they’re confined to at bedtime. We encourage families to continue this at home by letting your puppy nap in their crate during the day. This builds a positive association and helps reduce anxiety at night.
We follow a consistent daily routine that sets each puppy up for a restful sleep. Here’s what we’ve found works best:
1. Scheduled Feeding
Feed your puppy at regular times during the day. Avoid feeding too late in the evening, as this can increase the need for a late-night potty trip. Most puppies do best when their final meal is at least 3-4 hours before bedtime.
2. Water Management
Remove access to water 1.5 to 2 hours before bedtime. This simple step reduces the chance your Goldendoodle puppy will wake up needing to go out.
3. Active Play Before Bed
A good round of active play in the early evening helps your puppy burn off extra energy. A tired puppy is a sleepy puppy, and this physical activity also helps them settle emotionally before being crated for the night.
4. Crate = Safe Place
Use the crate during the day for short periods and naps so your puppy understands it’s a safe, familiar space. This reduces resistance at bedtime and helps them self-soothe when crated overnight.
What To Do If Your Puppy Whines at Night
It’s completely normal for puppies to whine in the crate during their first few nights in a new home. If your Micro Mini Goldendoodle starts to cry, stay calm. Go to their crate, wait for them to stop crying- yes they will ! Then Take them out for a quick potty break, then place them right back in the crate. Keep interactions minimal—this reinforces the idea that nighttime is for sleeping, not play.
Most of our puppies only need one brief potty trip in the first few nights, and many are already sleeping through the night thanks to the early training we’ve provided.
Because our Micro Mini Goldendoodle puppies are already accustomed to napping in their crates and spending short, structured time in them during the day, they’re set up for success by the time they go home. They’re familiar with a routine, already have a head start on potty training, and know how to settle in the crate.
Crate training and nighttime routines don’t have to be stressful—especially when you bring home a Cedar Doodles puppy. With our early preparation and your consistent care at home, your Micro Mini Goldendoodle will be sleeping soundly in no time.
